Lately, there has been a number of articles in the newspapers discussing the harmful impact of screen time on young children. A recent article in the Straits Times outlined various potential negative consequences when young children dedicate their time to mobile phones and other digital devices. Predictably, issues such as dry or tired eyes and the worsening of myopia were emphasized. Additionally, there are valid worries regarding their mental and behavioral growth, speech delays, and mental health challenges.
For very young children, the onus will lie squarely on parents and other care givers. Measures such as placing age-restriction on apps will not be relevant to these kids - they are not the ones that make the decisions to download. On the other hand, this is not to blame parents - how could we have known that digital devices would have such profound impact, especially on young kids?
As an ophthalmologist and a father, this is what I have learnt from my own experience with my child, and from speaking to other parents.
1. Parents should set an example by managing their own use of mobile devices, such as putting them aside during meals and when in conversation.
2. Set rules and expectations over screen time, and be consistent in enforcing them; for example, set a time limit for the child, and ensure that screen time is consumed in the living room and with a parent to supervise the content.
3. Arrange for and encourage outdoor activities. It does not have to be fancy or elaborate - young kids are more than happy to play in the playground or park. Even better if they learn to play a sport that they enjoy.
4. At home, give them alternatives to the phone or digital device; this can be a stack of library books, or even a tray of art supplies from the dollar store. If they are bored enough, this will occupy them. And sometimes being bored is good for kids!
The hope is that our children develop healthy interests in activities that will not be supplanted by the mobile phone, if and when they are finally old enough to get one.
