Myopia-control soft contact lenses for children are becoming more common in Singapore.

There is a rising demand for myopia-control contact lenses for children. While contact lens wear in children is still a niche area, it does not surprise me that more and more kids (and their parents) are choosing this form of refractive correction. Orthokeratology has been available for myopia control for many years now, but there are now daily disposable myopia-control soft lenses, which may be easier to handle and more comfortable for kids. Studies have also demonstrated that these different lenses are all effective in the short-to-medium term, slowing down myopia progression by an average of 30-50%.

I can understand why contact lenses are an attractive option for myopia control. Atropine drops alone cannot improve your vision, so glasses are still required; and for children who are active in sports or dance, being spectacle-free is important.

But despite the benefits, I am still cautious about contact lens wear in children. I already see plenty of adults with contact lens overwear and infected ulcers. Given that the average contact lens user has generally very poor lens care practices, it amazes me that we do not see more complications from contact lens wear. I believe it is a testament to the care provided by our community optometrists, as well as the robustness of our eyes' natural defenses.

In the end, parents know their children the best. I'm sure there will be 8- or 10-year-old kids who are very mature, and who will be diligent in their contact lens hygiene under supervision. But I think it bears repeating that contact lens complications can be potentially sight- threatening. While the risks are low, the consequences may be permanant and life-long. Instead, parents can consider the use of atropine drops and myopia control glasses for their children... and spend more time outdoors!
